Interpersonal Relationships
Student to student:
Healthy peer relationships allow students to take academic risks, learn social competencies, and reduce social isolation. Teachers must establish a learning environment that involves ensuring that all of your students’ identities are authentically represented, affirmed and valued. Students should learn from and with each other, support one another’s efforts, encourage each other, and celebrate small successes. In a classroom, I would encourage students to do this by doing activities before class starts like ice breakers so that they can build relationships and feel comfortable in a classroom.
Student to Teacher:
Students are more willing to cooperate with teachers who they feel are supportive, respectful, and show genuine interest in their overall well-being. Students also need to know that their identity and culture is valued. As someone who has had teachers who were very supportive of my education and teachers who made me feel unknowledgeable, I realize that it is important to be very supportive. Some students may struggle but if a teacher builds a relationship with them they will feel comfortable enough to ask for help, and that student will improve.
